The Goulburn River and its inflowing waters offer excellent fishing during the open rivers season.
Some of the more accessible fishing spots on the northern end of the Goulburn River and its tributaries are along the back road to Eildon via Thornton and Walnut Reserve on the front road to Eildon via Thornton. Gilmores Bridge is a popular area that is a short walk downstream to where the Rubicon River runs into the Goulburn River. This area is popular for fly fishing, lure and bait fishing.
Further downstream is the Breakaway area where the Acheron River flows into the Goulburn River. As well, this area is one of the most popular angling sections along the river. The best methods are bait, lure and flys. There are many spots below this area that are accessible by walking short distances.
There is also a recreation and camping area at Brookes Cutting five minutes from Alexandra. This area is marked on Lake Eildon map 5, which is available in tackle shops.
A boat ramp at the Goulburn bridge on the Maroondah Highway at Alexandra gives access to the water.
The river at Molesworth is crossed by the Goulburn Valley Highway and the Molesworth Caravan Park is sited on the river's banks offering plenty of room for day visitors and campers alike.
Lake Eildon and the Eildon Pondage are ideal places to catch that elusive trout. Both can be fished year round as there is no closed season for the lake.
Combine superb waters, excellent fishing, the presence of Snobs Creek Freshwater Discovery Centre, a host of trout farms, quality fishing tackle outlets and some of Victoria's most respected fishing guides and instructors and a long history for trout - and the greater Eildon becomes one of Australia's most important and prestigious trout destinations.
Pick up a guide from your local Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) office, or bait and tackle outlet where Recreational Fishing Licenses are sold. The NRE Customer Service Number is 136186.
